Buddhism was founded by Sākyamuni Gotama, the Buddha, in the 6^th century BCE in ancient India. As an enlightened person the Buddha propagated his teachings for 45 years. After his death, or Parinirvāna, his followers developed them both as a philosophy and religion.  Buddhism had its golden age in Asia due to the patronage of Asian kings and emperors. Today Buddhism is universally accepted as one of the spiritual and philosophical traditions followed by many millions of adherents.
